Reconfigurable Systems: A Potential Solution to the von Neumann Bottleneck
The difficulty of overcoming the disparity between processor speeds and data access speeds, a condition known as the von Neumann bottleneck, has been a source of consternation for computer hardware developers for many years. Although a number of temporary solutions have been proposed and implemented in modern machines, these solutions have only managed to treat the major symptoms, rather than solve the root problem. As the number of transistors on a chip roughly doubles every two years, the von Neumann bottleneck has continued to tighten in spite of these solutions, prompting some computer hardware professionals to advocate a paradigm shift away from the von Neumann architecture into something entirely new. Many have begun advocating the relatively new technology of reconfigurable systems, popularly known as morphware. The difficulty with adopting a new architectural paradigm, however, is that developers on both sides of the software-hardware spectrum must start from scratch, creating entirely new operating systems, hardware peripherals, application software, and user interfaces, all of which must seem familiar to the end user, yet still take advantage of the improvements morphware has to offer. With this in mind, this thesis builds off of the fundamental theory and current implementations of morphware to describe the processes and products necessary to develop and deliver morphware to the average user as a viable alternative to current technology

Instructional strategies in the EGRET course: an international graduate forum on becoming a researcher
In today’s knowledge economy, graduate students in the field of Computer Science are increasingly required to develop sophisticated, multi-faceted knowledge of conducting research across multiple contexts and countries. This paper reports the experience of teaching a course to prepare Computer Science graduate students for conducting research in the international community. The course emphasized development of skills critical for a successful research career in computer science, and included construction of knowledge as well as hands-on application of instructional content. The intended learning outcomes included (a) gaining familiarity with research design and methodologies in computer science, (b) preparing and delivering research presentations, (c) reviewing the literature, (d) reading and writing research papers, (e) writing and evaluating research proposals, and (f) networking in the international research community.
In this paper, we describe an innovative instructional design that emphasized international collaboration with graduate students from another university on a different continent, namely the Open University in the UK. Our instructional strategies included (a) remote participation of graduate students across universities and countries in real-time, using technologies for synchronous computer mediated communication, (b) incorporation of collaborative activities using online tools scaffolding students’ construction of sophisticated knowledge of key research activities, and (c) providing students with opportunities for hands-on practical application of concepts in collaborative research activities

The effects of iodinated CT contrast agent on phosphorus MRS
Synopsis
Contrast-enhanced CT examination can influence H-MRI measurements performed within 24h after the CT scan, due to a reduction in water T and T caused
by the iodinated contrast agents used in CT. We have investigated whether contrast from a previous CT examination would also influence metabolic
measurements made using P-MRS, by measuring the T of H and P signals in human blood. We find that iodinated CT contrast agent has no effect on
phosphorus T s. Therefore, P-MRS examinations will not be influenced by prior CT (unlike H-MRI scans). We acknowledge financial support from the British Heart Foundation (FS/10/002/28078; FS/14/17/30634; RG/11/9/28921), a Sir Henry Dale Fellowship from the Wellcome

A 3D-Hybrid-Shot Spiral Sequence for Hyperpolarized C Imaging
Purpose: Hyperpolarized imaging experiments have conflicting requirements of
high spatial, temporal, and spectral resolution. Spectral-Spatial RF excitation
has been shown to form an attractive magnetization-efficient method for
hyperpolarized imaging, but the optimum readout strategy is not yet known.
Methods: In this work we propose a novel 3D hybrid-shot spiral sequence which
features two constant density regions that permit the retrospective
reconstruction of either high spatial or high temporal resolution images post
hoc, (adaptive spatiotemporal imaging) allowing greater flexibility in
acquisition and reconstruction.
Results: We have implemented this sequence, both via simulation and on a
pre-clinical scanner, to demonstrate its feasibility, in both a 1H phantom and
with hyperpolarized 13C pyruvate in vivo. Conclusion: This sequence forms an
attractive method for acquiring hyperpolarized imaging datasets, providing
adaptive spatiotemporal imaging to ameliorate the conflict of spatial and
temporal resolution, with significant potential for clinical translation
